Melbourne won the voting for the hosting of the Olympics by a fair bit. They won against Buenos Aries in Argentina, Mexico City in Mexico and six American cities; LA, Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, Philadelphia and San Francisco. Melbourne won all 4 rounds. Round 1 Melbourne won by 5 votes, round two was won by 4 votes, round 3 was won by 6 votes and round 4 was won by only 1 vote.
The Olympic torch arrived in Melbourne on the 22nd of Nov 1956.
All the sports played at the Olympics were Athletics, Basketball, Boxing, conoeing, cycling, diving, equestrian, frencing, football, gymnastics, hockey, modern penthathlon, rowing, sailing, shooting, swimming, water polo, weightlifting and wrestling.
67 nations attended these olympics and for 7 of them it was their olympic games debut. 5 other nations did the equestrain events in another country and did not attend Australia.
After the Olympic Games there were some landmarks left behind. The cricket ground was eventually demolished in 2004, but the Olympic Pool is still there as a tourist attraction.
