On the 18th of Jan in 1977 in Granville a little suburb West of Sydney a crowded train derailed running into a bridge. The bridge fell onto the first two carriages. This accident killed 83 people with 210 people injured. This was the worst train disaster in the history of Australia based on people dying. The third and the fourth carriage were trapped under the bridge and were crushed instantainiously. Many people from these carriages died immediately but some of the ones who didn't suffered from crush syndrome which is when someone has had a enormous but not deadly amount of weight on them then quickly removed they will die. This happens because they suffer from a loss of fluids such as potassium from the crushed area. The train driver and all the people who were traveling on the bridge at the time were okay and only suffered minor injuries. People say this happened because of the poor laying of the train rails and poor ground levels, which made a crash because of the speed the train was going. This accident gave everyone a wake-up call which encouraged them to make the bridges and tracks like these more sturdy and reliable to prevent this from happening again.
